Harry Potter Scarf!

I'm sure tons of people have made this by now, but I wanted to try it myself in my own way!!!

My little darling Fib tried to help me make the fringes

~4.5" fringes

TA-DA!

This is how I did it:
This pattern uses Tunisian Knit Stitching.
A great tutorial website that I absolutely love is http://www.nexstitch.com/v_tks.html
There are tons and tons of other tunisian stitching other than knit stitch.
Another good tutorial website also includes a tutorial on the base row that you'll need to start with:
http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=41

I wanted to make this scarf wide, but you can adjust the width however you would like based on your chain length.
But, here's what I did anyways

Caron Soft Yarn: Autumn Red and Soft Yellow
Hook: J
With Red (or desired starting color)
Chain 33 (change this to be shorter or longer as you wish)
Forward Row 1: Perform Base Row (stitchdiva.com link above)
Reverse Row 1: Return row
Forward Row 2: Tunisian knit stitch across
Reverse Row 2: Return row
repeat row 2 until you are ready to change colors (20 rows for me)
Forward Row 20: tks across
Reverse Row 20: return row with YELLOW yarn

And repeat Row 2 with yellow. Continue Red/Yellow/Red/Yellow til you reach your desired length :)

For the fringes, I looped the yarn 6 times around and cut one end of it.  Or you can measure 6 long strings roughly 9" long or your desired length.  If you do it this way, fold the 6 pieces of yarn in half and take the loop end and thread it through a hole at the end of the scarf and pull the end pieces through the loop.

There you go!

  1. Found your blog via Ravelry. I can't wait to give this scarf a shot, just in time for the last movie! I like the knitted look of it better than other crochet patterns I've found. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Good luck!! Can't wait for the last movie either :)

  3. Also found your blog on Ravelry. This is really cute. I was wondering how long it takes you to complete a tunisian crochet scarf?

  4. Tunisian crocheting really honestly takes a long time. I can't say how many hours it took me total because i couldn't keep crocheting for more than 2 hours at a time! haha but this one took me a few weeks to finish though. a few hours everyday.

    1. Does the other side of the Tunisian Stitch look alright with the scarf? And does it look weird if you can see both sides

    2. Hi! Since this isn't like knitting (where both sides look the same), the tunisian stitching won't look the same on the other side. I think this is really based on preference and is very subjective; I say, no, it doesn't look weird if the other side is seen, but others may disagree. It just doesn't bother me that the other side looks like a "wrong side" of the scarf. You can probably view some examples of the "wrong side" of the tunisian stitch to see if this is something that you are ok with!

      Thanks!

  5. Cool, thanks. I am making a scarf for my grandma and I am hoping to have it done by her birthday next month on the 14th. It is going well so far. Much Much faster than the knitted scarf I just made. How did you prevent the scarf from curling though? My largest hook is only an H and I am trying really hard to keep it loose to no avail. Going to crochet a border around it when finished to see if it helps. :-)

  6. Well the curling actually ended up being fixed up a little after you add the fringes! so don't forget that part if you plan to do that.

Another suggestion I have read is you can alternate rows - knit, purl, knit, purl, and then maybe continue knit the whole way. The purling part seemed to have been a solution for a lot of people. I had the same problem with the curling but just stuck with it and once I added the fringes it was ok :)

  7. Awesome. :) I am a little less than halfway done with hers. Hopefully the fringes will work for me. If they don't I will steam block it I think. Thanks for the help.

  8. Hi! That is a very wonderful scarf. I want to make one for my little sis but I'm a very beginner. Do you think I would be able to do it? Also, what is the classification of the yarn you used? I can't find Caron's yarn where I live, what can I use instead?

    Thanks!

  9. Hi! Sure I think you can do it! The tutorial sites I listed are places where I learned to do it myself the first time. I mainly work with worsted weight yarn, which is what the Caron Yarn I used was. So anything that's worsted weight would work!

  12. How many skeins are needed for each color? Your scarf is beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  13. well - it depends how long you would like to have your scarf, but I believe that for my length that I made, it took a little over 1 skein for Caron Soft yarn for each color. :)

  14. Hi! Thank you for this great pattern. I love Harry Potter and this scarf is beautiful! This will be my first Tunisian Knitting project, I'm very excited. I do have a question about the colours you used for the yarn and I hope you can help me. You mention you used Autumn Red and Soft Yellow. However, every internet shop I've tried (Dutch stores do not have Caron Simply Soft in stock) the options for yellow are mango, sunshine and lemonade, not soft yellow. Maybe the names have changed? Is is possible for you to check the number of the colour you used. I don't want to order the yarn from overseas on a guess and end up with the wrong colour! Thanks so much in advance :)

  15. Hi!

It seems even the Caron website doesn't carry this color! The number of the color is 067068, and it looks like this website carries it: http://www.hancockfabrics.com/Simply-Soft-Yarn----Soft-Yellow-Caron_stcVVproductId82439783VVcatId539744VVviewprod.htm

Autumn Red is also on this page:
    http://www.hancockfabrics.com/Simply-Soft-Yarn----Autumn-Red-Caron_stcVVproductId82439800VVcatId539744VVviewprod.htm

So you can buy both from Hancock Fabrics :)

Hope that helps and good luck!! You can always use other yarn as well that is available in your area, especially yarn that you like the feeling of. I had chosen Caron bc it had that shiny soft feel to it, but many others may choose to use wool or acrylics and those all work too!

  18. What exactly did you do with the ends of the colours? Can`t find a tutorial for tunisian stitches for hiding the yarn. Thank you

    1. Hi Michi,
the ends of the yarn I just took a yarn needle and weaved them through the stitches to hide them.
Hope that helps! If you know a better way let me know! That's what I did.

  19. This is awesome. In a beginner at crochet (almost a year now), and love learning new stitches. My daughter wants one of these scarves, and I started on it last night, between working on other projects. A little ways into it I realized I'm going to need a longer crochet hook.

  20. What size crochet hook are you using for this?

  21. Hey! So I tried out this Tunisian knit stitch a looong time ago and I just don't know what I am doing wrong. My work not only curls like crazy, but one side has the lovely knit look and when you flip it over, the other side looks a mess. I am not really sure what I am doing wrong. Any advise?

    1. Hey!! Believe it or not, you ARE on the right track. Tunisian knit stitch curls like crazy!! HOWEVER, once you add the frills, it doesn't curl anymore :) However though, i mean, it's been a few years since i've done this.. but I believe that if you want it to curl less, you can input some other stitches to help - here's a good tutorial to try:
      http://www.crochet-world.com/blog/?p=7335

the thing with tunisian knit is that it isn't like real knitting where both sides will look like a knit. Only one side will look like a knit and the other side will.. not. Although it shouldn't "look like a mess". The wrong side should look like this:

Anyway sorry this is such a challenge!

  22. Hi! this pattern is probably one of the best type of harry potter scarves I have seen! Came here from pinterest :D and so happy i did! Im making myself a ravenclaw one. I just finished the first set of 20 rows and just curious of how long the scarf will be. What would you estimate the length of your scarf?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Esra! Thank you for your compliments!
Well this scarf can be as long as you would like it to be! I made mine really long.. unfortunately I do not know the length and i gave it away as a gift. However though, in the last photo in the post, I had it wrapped around my neck in two loops so that the fringes could be seen. I think that is probably as long as a standard scarf.

      Good luck!

  23. Hi! I love this pattern :)

I was just wondering, did you block the scarf afterwards, or did you find it unnecessary?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Anaya! No, I did not block it, because the fringes themselves helped prevent any curling that there was during the process.

  24. What size hook did you use? I'm doing a Ravenclaw scarf and using a 7mm hook

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi! My pattern specified a J hook, which is 6 mm :) hope that helps! 7mm should be fine , it would just be a little wider if that's how you want it!

  25. Watched a video on The Crochet Crowd a while back that suggested always using at least one size up to help prevent curling. Might have to adjust the amount of starting stitches to prevent it from being too wide? Even the amount of rows? I dunno, but it's a lovely pattern, and I thank you for sharing it. I'll put it on my enormous list of projects I'd like to make before I die - lol!

    1. Hi! I can't believe I hadn't seen this message until now -
I apologize. Regarding the curling, it actually wasn't a problem for me AFTER i put the tassels on. but yes, it was a definitely curly while I was working the rows! I have tried the one-size up approach and it has worked but I didn't adjust the amount of starting stitches so it did end up looking too wide, but I'll definitely consider that for the future. Thank you for the tips, and thank you for your comment!
